Clipstone Cemetery Rules and Regulations for Visitors
In setting these rules and regulations, Clipstone Parish Council is attempting to balance the individual wishes of bereaved families with the need to ensure the Cemetery is safely managed for the benefit of all visitors. We also want to preserve the attractiveness of the Cemetery.
You are therefore respectfully asked to read and keep to the following rules:
-
The scattering of cremated remains is not permitted anywhere in the cemetery or on any other Parish Council land.
-
New interments usually require the purchasing of the Exclusive Right of Burial in a particular plot. In doing so you do not gain ownership or any other rights over the grave space.
-
Permission must be obtained in writing from the Parish Clerk prior to any interment, placement of a memorial, or any other work in Clipstone Cemetery. Your chosen funeral director or stone mason will normally complete the necessary forms on your behalf. If you do not use a professional service, then you must complete the forms yourself and get approval before starting any work.
-
All applications must be made on the most recent Clipstone Cemetery forms available for that purpose.
-
Memorials placed without permission may be removed by Clipstone Parish Council at the owner’s expense.
-
For all new memorials the following maximum dimensions apply:
-
Memorials in the new part for earthen graves must not exceed 100cm in height, 95cm in width and 50cm in depth. These are overall maximum dimensions from ground level.
-
For cremated remains plots the maximum dimensions are 50cmx50cmx50cm.
Plots in the old part of the cemetery vary in size and dimensions for each individual plot will need to be confirmed before any work can be carried out.
-
The Council no longer permits secondary memorials. Any additional items must be contained within the footprint of the memorial (maximum: 95cm wide, 60cm deep). Existing memorials on earthen graves (no more than 30 cm in depth) may be fitted with an additional slab immediately in front of the memorial of no more than 30 cm in depth.
-
Permission will only be given for a memorial or vase made of natural stone or other suitable quality, durable material. Any personal mementos must be kept within the area of the headstone plaque and not encroach onto the grass or graves of others. This will allow us to cut the grass without damaging your property or injuring staff and cemetery visitors.
-
All memorials must have suitable BRAMM/NAMM fixings.
-
No items made of easily breakable materials may be displayed. Clipstone Parish Council takes no responsibility for loss of or damage to any non-approved memorials, mementos or markers.
-
The Council reserves the right to remove any items which are likely to cause injury to visitors or cemetery staff or are considered otherwise not in keeping with the cemetery.
-
Any memorial erected in the Cemetery remains the property and responsibility of the grave owner or memorial applicant if different and must be kept in a good state of repair. The Council reserves the right to make safe any memorial which has become, or is considered likely to become, dangerous or which is in an unsightly condition. Any costs incurred will be charged to the grave/memorial owner.
-
The Council will cut all grass throughout the cemetery.
-
No other grave coverings, such as artificial turf, stone chippings, slate or other materials are permitted.
-
Kerbstones and other means of marking the boundary of the grave of any kind are not permitted. Historic kerbstones may not be replaced with new ones.
-
Cut flowers, pot plants and flower arrangements are allowed on the grave but must be kept within the confines of the memorial or plaque. No trees, bushes or shrubs must be planted.
-
Please remove dead flowers and dispose of them in the bins provided. Any Christmas wreaths should be removed by the end of January. The Council reserves the right to dispose of any dead flowers in order to maintain an overall pleasant appearance of the cemetery.
-
Vehicles should be parked in the designated area at the entrance of the Cemetery. Please consider the needs of other visitors and particularly those attending a funeral.
-
Drive slowly (no more than 5 miles per hour) on the access road to the Cemetery as it is shared with pedestrians.
-
Out of respect for other families, keep to the footpaths except whilst visiting a grave.
-
No dogs except working Guide or Assistance Dogs are allowed in the cemetery by order of Newark and Sherwood District Council.
-
No games or sport are permitted in the Cemetery grounds.
-
No music to be played except by prior agreement at a burial.
-
No alcohol to be consumed in the cemetery at any time.
Maintaining the Cemetery
Clipstone Parish Council manages and maintains the Cemetery in accordance with the Local Authorities’ Cemeteries Order 1977 and subsequent amendments issued by the Secretary of State.
The Council will not accept responsibility for damage or breakage to any memorial, other items placed on graves with or without permission or to cars (whether parked or using the Cemetery road).
Maintenance work carried out by our staff can mean some temporary disruption to your visit or loved one’s grave. Every effort is made to minimise this disruption, but we ask for your understanding and patience. In particular:
-
Maintenance operations involving machinery which can be noisy.
-
Weed killer will be used to reduce growth around the base of the memorials.
-
Occasionally, generally for burial purposes, it is also necessary to carry out work on the adjacent grave or plot. This will result in the generation of spoil and nearby grass may be flattened. Your loved one’s grave and headstone will be covered to help protect it and work to return conditions to normal will be carried out as soon as possible.
-
Graves will be seeded or turfed as soon as it is practically possible to do so following an interment.
